Reproduction and Life Cycle
Asexual Reproduction
Various forms of asexual reproduction are evident in Annelida. These methods encompass a parent worm fragmenting into two or more pieces, as well as producing offspring through budding while the parent remains intact. While certain species appear to exclusively reproduce asexually, others engage in asexual reproduction during summer and switch to sexual reproduction in autumn.Sexual Reproduction
It is theorized that annelids originally exhibited (38), possessing separate sexes that released eggs and sperm externally through their nephridia. The fertilized eggs then develop into (39), which inhabit the planktonic environment. Subsequently, these larvae settle to the seafloor and undergo (40) into miniature adults: the area between the apical tuft and the prototroch transforms into the prostomium; a small region around the anus of the trochophore becomes the pygidium; a narrow band anterior to the pygidium forms the growth zone responsible for generating new segments; and the remainder of the trochophore develops into the peristomium.
